HEATON AND DISTRICT MODEL POWER BOAT CLUB CENTENARY 1910 TO 2010

The Tyneside Two-Day Regatta was held on Saturday 5th June and Sunday 6th June at Paddy Freemans Park, Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne to mark the centenary of the Heaton & District Model Power Boat Club.

The weather on the Saturday was perfect , sunny and very warm with very little wind. Because the club members had started to set up from 7:30am, they were able to start earlier than programmed which was just as well as the entry included 38 straight running boats on the score sheet, this being 10 boats more than in 2009.

The events run consisted of a Nomination, (one run over a 75 yard course) and then 3 runs over the same course with the highest total from the 3 runs determining the winner.
The event started at 10:15 am with the lunch break at 12:15pm. Heaton provided free fish and chips to all competitors which were finished off in time for the Lord Mayor, Brenda Hindmarsh, to give an opening address and present all the visiting competitors with a commemorative crystal paperweight. The club also presented her with one as a memento.

The event then continued to a conclusion at 5pm after tie runs between Adam Thompson a Junior member of the Heaton Club and Roger Lane of the St. Albans Club in the wedge class for 1st and 2nd places. There was also a tie between Tony Willett of the Welwyn Garden City Club, Brian Spinks of the same club and Sara Glendenning of the Heaton Club for 3rd place with Brian Spinks coming out the winner. The Functional class positions were decided without tie runs being required.
This event was then followed by a short Knock Out Competition between four competitors with Brian Spinks being the eventual winner.

On the Sunday the weather was not so pleasant, cooler and overcast with rain on the way. The day started well with everything set up by 9:45am and as all competitors were present it was agreed to start at 10:00am.
There were 40 boats this time with the event run over the same 75yd course with 4 runs per boat. The first run being a trial and the next 3 runs scoring, the highest total determining the winner. The Heaton Club had arranged for a Buffet lunch at 12 noon free to all visitors and club members. After the lunch break, and before the competition restarted, the competitors that had turned up on the Sunday, but not been present on the Saturday were presented with their commemorative crystal paperweights. Competitions restarted at 1:00 pm and they finished at 5:10pm despite the arrival of the rain at about 2:30pm. There was only one competitor prepared to take part in a Knock Out competition so it was agreed not to hold that event. The awards were then presented to the winners.
Finally the Heaton & District Model Power Boat Club thanked all who attended and all those who had helped to make the event one that will be long remembered. A special thanks were given to the Model Power Boat Association for their generous donation towards the celebration, and also to the Straight running section of the MPBA for their donation to the Northern Area Section, the Heaton Club’s proportion of the donation being used to fund part of the centenary weekend.
